In this lesson, the students were introduced to S.E. Hinton, the author of The Outsiders. The Prezi presentation included two book talks The Outsiders and That Was Then, This is Now. The students completed a Bio Poem activity on the life of S.E. Hinton.

STATE/Local Standards:
Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content.
Objective(s):
By the end of the 30 minute lesson, the students will be able to discuss the life of S.E. Hinton by completing a bio poem about her life.
PROCEDURES:
Introduction
Transition/Focus Attention:
The students will enter the classroom and sit in their assigned seats and take out their The Outsiders book.
Motivation/Hook:
Each student will receive a Bio Poem handout. They will be asked to take out a pen or pencil. The teacher will read the Bio Poem handout and explain that the students should complete it using information from the prezi presentation. The teacher will open the prezi presentation about S.E. Hinton’s life and the students will listen to information about S.E. Hinton’s background and novels. The students will complete the bio poem while watching the presentation. The teacher will give the students 5 minutes to finish their bio poems after the prezi is over. The students will be asked to volunteer to share their bio poem with the class.
Set Behavior Expectations:
The students are expected to watch the prezi presentation and complete the bio poem using information from the presentation.
Set Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to learn about S.E. Hinton’s life. The knowledge about her life will be useful when the students read The Outsiders. The students will be asked to read their bio poem aloud practicing reading fluency.
Strategy and Grouping Pattern Used:
The students will work as a class for the first part of instruction. Then the students will work independently to finish their bio poem.
Group Size:
Whole class/independently
Steps/Learning Activities/Differentiated Instruction:
Differentiation:
Visual learners will like seeing the prezi presentation on the board. Interpersonal learners will like taking with the entire class. Verbal learners will benefit from listening to the prezi read aloud.
Closure:
When the bell rings, the students will be dismissed.
Assessment Activities:
The teacher will be able to see each students understanding of S.E. Hinton by looking at their bio poems.
Transition:
Today we learned about S.E. Hinton. Having background knowledge about the author will be helpful us as we read The Outsiders.
REFLECTION
How do you know that learning took place? How does the data support your conclusion?
The students turned in their bio poems and I was able to see how much the students learned about S.E. Hinton.
What kind of adaptations did you make to accommodate individual differences? What other adaptations would be helpful to accommodate the needs of individual students?
I there were students who could not see the presentation, I had them move closer to the board. There were parts of the Prezi that had a lot of words and were hard to see. I would remake the Prezi so that there are less words on some slides.
Other than the modifications discussed above, would you change any aspect of the plan or how you conducted the lesson? (E.g. introduction and transitions, sequence of activities, time management, questioning, etc.) Why or why not? What changes would you make?
Next time I teach the lesson, I will have the students create a Bio Poem as a class and individually. I think it will be beneficial to have more student involvement.
If you used technology in your lesson, how did you select that particular tech tool? Why did you use that particular tool? Briefly describe the results. Indicate why or why not you would use this tool again in this setting.
I used a Prezi presentation. I think the Prezi was more interesting for the students to watch rather than a PowerPoint. I had to download the presentation to my cooperating teachers laptop because the Internet at SRS is sometimes slow. Since I downloaded it, there was no issues of it freezing throughout the lesson.
