"What is Inspiration?"
In this lesson, the students were asked to discuss inspiration. As a hook, they were shown a video on Lopez Lomong. Lopez Lomong is a South Sudanese-born American track and field athlete. Lomong, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan, came to the United States at the age of 16 and became a U.S. citizen in 2007.

STATE/Local Standards:
Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 7 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly.
Objective(s):
By the end of the 30 minute lesson, the students will be able to describe what it means to be inspirational by picking two inspirational people and writing a journal entry about them.
PROCEDURES:
Introduction
Transition/Focus Attention:
The students will enter the classroom and sit in their assigned seats.
Motivation/Hook:
Tell the students that next week, we will be making a prezi on someone we think is inspirational. The students will watch the video “Lopez Lomong: From war child to U.S. Olympics star”. When the video is over, the students will be asked to take out a piece of paper for their journal entry. They will title the journal, Journal #3. The journal questions will be posted on the active board. The students will be given 10 minutes to answer the questions. The teacher will stop the students after 10 minutes. The teacher will ask for volunteers to read their journal aloud to the class. The class will have a discussion about inspirational people and what it means to be inspirational. Going around the classroom, the students will name their two inspirational choices and why they chose them. The teacher will assign the students their homework: find a print source on one of the inspirational people you chose. The print source will be used to create a prezi on the selected inspirational person.
Set Behavior Expectations:
The students are expected to watch the video. They must write for the whole 10 minutes responding to the journal questions. All students are expected to participate in the discussion.
Set Purpose:
The purpose of this lesson is to discuss the meaning of inspiration. The students will be creating a prezi on the person they think is inspirational. The 10-minute journal writing will help the students with their writing fluency.
Strategy and Grouping Pattern Used:
The class will participate in the discussion together. The students will write the quick write independently.
Group Size:
Whole class/independent
Steps/Learning Activities/Differentiated Instruction:
Differentiation:
Visual learners will like watching the CNN video “Lopez Lomong: From war child to U.S. Olympics star”. Interpersonal learners will like talking with the entire class.
Closure:
When the bell rings, the students will be dismissed.
Assessment Activities:
The teacher will determine what the students think inspiration means during the classroom discussion.
Transition:
Today we learned about inspiration. We will use the two people you chose as inspirations to create a prezi presentation.
REFLECTION
How do you know that learning took place? How does the data support your conclusion?
In the class discussion, I could clearly see what students thought about inspiration. In the homework, I saw the people the students chose as inspirations.
What kind of adaptations did you make to accommodate individual differences? What other adaptations would be helpful to accommodate the needs of individual students?
I had to adjust the volume of the video so that all students could hear.
Other than the modifications discussed above, would you change any aspect of the plan or how you conducted the lesson? (E.g. introduction and transitions, sequence of activities, time management, questioning, etc.) Why or why not? What changes would you make?
Next time I teach this lesson, I will make sure that I have a discussion after the video so that all students understand what happened in the video. During this time, students can ask comprehension questions.
If you used technology in your lesson, how did you select that particular tech tool? Why did you use that particular tool? Briefly describe the results. Indicate why or why not you would use this tool again in this setting.
The internet was running slow and the video took a while to load but after loading, it ran through completely without pauses.
